Staff Network Engineer


As a Staff Network Engineer in our Operations Engineering team, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing escalations support to our operations service desk for issues they have trouble solving independently
  • Providing engineering support such as advice, technical reviews, architecture analysis, and more to other operational teams 
  • Being the resident expert in one or more core service provided in order to provide in-depth analysis, escalation support, and insights into service operations and issues
  • Being the conduit for requirements for new operational tooling from other operational teams and translating those requirements into technical requirements our development teams can understand/execute on
  • Analyzing and troubleshooting various problems operating surrounding operations, such as streaming issues, content unblocking, speed and quality issues, and more
  • Having an in-depth understanding of the operational technologies and metrics that help us measure quality, speed, user experience, and more, and making solid recommendations when we’re missing those metics
  • Creating or proposing systems, tools, and scripts that give operations greater control to adjust operational settings and configurations to improve our customer experience
  • Understanding, analyzing, and explaining the way data flows through our operational systems from customer to destination
  • Building and maintaining a solid monitoring capability for operational metrics and alerting
  • Leading project teams to execute specific operational changes or deployments
  • Mentoring and coaching junior engineers and engineers/analysts from other operational departments
  • Writing and driving OKRs that improve the capabilities of our operational systems and control
  • Generating presentations and reports that provide valuable insights to the rest of the business

To succeed in this role, you should  have experience in your area of specialization in Network Engineering, such as:

  • Advanced level knowledge:
    • Deep packet analysis
    • Networking and internet protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP and more
    • Border/Exterior routing protocols such as BGP
    • Wide area networks, SD-WAN, or similar technologies
    • Local area network technologies and protocols such as ARP
    • Wireshark
    • Netflow/sFlow or similar technologies
    • Network capacity planning/engineering
    • Troubleshooting
    • Escalation Engineering
    • Monitoring/Analysis tools
    • Creating/Documenting IT Architectures
    • Systems Architectures and Design
    • Creating dashboard using time-series-databases
    • Responding to incident
  • Ability to explain issues and technologies
  • Good verbal communications in English
  • Good writing/documentation skills in English

Additional experience in any of these areas will also be useful: 

  • Experience with VPNs, streaming services, anonymous proxies, or similar technologies
  • Python or similar scripting language
  • Grafana, Influxdb, and related technologies
  • IPs and geo-location knowledge
  • SQL and other queries
  • Defining requirements and use-cases
  • Certifications in your specialization
